Doubles List- Eldar Analysis

So what on earth were we thinking bringing Space Wolves and Eldar together in the first place. Well, it's pretty easy- they're the only painted armies we have!

The Farseer is decently costed and got to cast guide a lot. The Grey Knight player didn't cast a single power the entire game. I wish we had capitalized on this but I stupidly deployed my Long Fangs and missed a solid opportunity to blow up those rhinos.

We decided that two squads of Fire Dragons would be great at Elite. I still think that this is the right choice given the Force Org limitations that I explained in the last post. They performed quite well and I would play them far more aggressively. I think we were hoping that they would survive more than being a simple suicide unit, but I think that was an optimistic hope. Most of the time, they got out, did their thing, and died a glorious death.

When they eventually update this codex, hopefully they bring down the cost on the transports and the units. There are just so many more efficient choices in other codices.

So, I'll discuss the Wolves first and maybe post this afternoon about the Eldar.

First of all, we had the following restrictions
0-1 HQs
0-1 Elites
1-3 Troops
0-1 Fast Attack
0-1 Heavy Support

and a floating squad, either Elite, Fast Attack or Heavy Support.

Nothing in the Eldar Heavy Support really compares to the efficiency of Long Fangs so we knew fairly quickly that we were going to max out on Long Fangs. Because of some silly deployment issues I didnt get as much bang for my buck from them in the first game, but they were pretty much the all-stars of the wolf list all day. Not much more to say about Missile Launcher Long Fangs other than- they're good.

The real choice in the wolf list came down to two choices

1. Do I take Scouts over Wolf Guard?
2. How big should the Grey Hunter squads be?

Obviously I wanted to max out on troops. I never found myself wanting during the day and that's a good thing. Always max out your troops at 2000 points (if you're playing Space Wolves). The question is, was six grey hunters enough? I think so. I never thought, "man, I wish I had MORE Grey hunters". Ultimately, I think 6 was a good number and I dont think I'd change it.

The scouts/wolf guard decision was the big one and I think I may have made the wrong decision here. Ultimately, there just wasn't a lot of close combat. I can only count ONE instance where the powerfist gave me the edge I was looking for.

My normal 1500 pt list (the point value we typically play at) includes two squads of scouts. I love what they do. I really felt hampered in how I could affect the back end of the board during our games. In Game two, against Guard/Orks, I really would have appreciated some ability to manipulate the back field. If I had to go to this kind of tournament again, I'd swap out the wolf-guard for a squad of scouts.

As discussed elsewhere, one squad of scouts affects how the other player deploys. We likely would have seen less parking lots. Ultimately, I think I made the wrong decision in not bringing a decent sized scout squad for messing up the back field.

Initial Pics of some figs!

A quick picture of a lone wolf that I've been working on. The base isn't finished, but I've been working on the blending and painting.

I'll post up a list and a discussion tomorrow.

New 40k Blog, hopefully not the EXACT same as the other 40k blogs!

I've decided to keep a blog about my 40k experience. I have a few buddies who may contribute as well, we'll see.

I'm always trying to improve my painting so I'm going to try and focus 50/50 on painting and playing.

I've been playing Space Wolves since April of 2011 and they are my first army. I'm also starting a Dark Eldar army and I haven't really started painting it, so I'm going to chronicle most of that on here as well. I'll put up some shots of my work over the coming days.

I'm relatively new so each game is a learning experience! The goal is to write about the games, analyze them and try to see what can be done better. I'll also post my various lists and have some discussion around that.

Doubles 40k, Conquest Toronto

So, I attended at Conquest Toronto on the weekend and played in the doubles tournament. It was my first large scale event (about 16 teams). We played 4 games over the course of the day.

We had to come up with 1000 pt army with restrictions that can be found at http://www.conquesttoronto.com/ . A big thanks to these guys for the awesome day. They put on a great event and I can't wait to play in the next tournament.

I played Space Wolves and my partner played Eldar. We completely lost our first two games and won/drew our last two games, so I'd say we were somewhere near the low end of the second third. As we're new, we were mostly learning and trying to get a sense of how far we had progressed since we started from scratch in April.

Game 1 (Grey Knights, Dark Eldar)

We played two awesome guys who were both mid twenties and had a good attitude. We may have been able to eke out a draw on objectives but "dice down" was called after top of T5 (we were going second). In retrospect, we should have ended the game after the end of T4. In the future, I'll try not to let this happen again, but we were new and didnt even know this was a possibility.  I come from a background in gaming in Magic and thought that they would call "last turn" or something. Live and learn. We lost on objectives and KP. They played well and I think we gave them a good game, but we didnt get the advantage of going second.

Game 2 (Ork, Guard)

We were up against a hard Ork/Imperial Guard army that was just the rock to our scissors. We lost this one worst than the first. I played the objective wrong and my partner couldnt get the kills he needed. There was also a big line of sight blocker in the middle of the board and they had ordinance that didnt need line of sight. We couldnt get to where we needed to go, and I think we weren't being aggressive enough with their army.

We didnt have as much experience with Spearhead deployment. They gave us a good ass kicking and there isn't much more to say.

Game 3 (Space Wolves, Dark Eldar)

We come up against two gentlemen who said that they had been playing for years. Their list stank, their play stank, and we pretty much dominated the game. It was funny discussing the game with them afterwards as it really felt like they thought they had us on the run. We tied on Victory points, but we were beating them by 150 at the end of T4.

We made very few mistakes in this game, as once I saw their list I realized it would be a good opportunity to finally get some Ws.  Protip- dont drop your 200 pt Venerable dreadnought next to a unit of fire dragons.

We got to turn four with this game, but had we had another turn, we'd have run them ragged.

Game 4 (Tau, Eldar)
We come up against two other individuals who were playing shitty lists again. We rolled over them as well. They were playing Tau/Eldar. We came out a bit slow because the Tau beat us up in the first two turns, but after that the momentum switched as we started moving up the board and forcing them off objectives. Not much to say other than Tau can lay it DOWN!

Summary

All in all, a pretty cool day of games. A team put us down as their best sportsmanship but we didn't win it, lol. I'd say success as at least we didn't come last in our first big tournament! I'll put the list up later.
